The Oldest and Largest Student Investment Fund at Brown

Learn by managing a $500k+ investment portfolio

The Brown Investment Group is Brown’s premier student-run investment fund. Founded in 1987, the Brown Investment Group is both the oldest and largest investment club on campus. We are dedicated to both teaching and practicing the principles of investing. We are composed of a highly selective research committee of 35 students and general body of over 500 students.

We manage two separate funds — our Core (long-only) Fund with $400K AUM (est. in 2002) and our Long/Short Fund with $100K AUM (est. in 2023). Our Long/Short Fund is the first ever student-run, university-endorsed long/short fund in the nation. Our two funds provide the flexibility necessary to generate a diverse array of investment theses, from classic value strategies to short-term, catalyst-driven opportunities.

Core Values

We are proud that collaboration—one of our group’s core themes—is such a key part of our operations. Whether through teamwork on our pitches or general body discussions, our members and leadership value the cooperative spirit of the club.

At BIG we believe that the most valuable way to learn is through hands-on experience. We hope to provide our members this exposure by executing real trades and monitoring our fund’s performance, giving students some insight into the equity investing process.

BIG in Action

Speaker Series

On April 14, David Kostin, Goldman Sachs Chief U.S. Equity Strategist, joined us to discuss his team’s noteworthy claim that due to market concentration, the S&P 500 will provide much lower annualized returns than most investors expect.

After a 45-minute presentation, some of our members had the opportunity to speak directly to Mr. Kostin and ask him questions about his team’s research.

Stock Pitches

Seen here, our FIG/Real Estate coverage team pitches an investment in BFF Bank, which has since been a profitable investment for the fund.

Each semester, all seven of our industry sector teams present in-depth investment theses to the broader group. These pitches are followed by rigorous Q&A sessions, fostering critical discussion, strengthening conviction, and sharpening our investment decision-making.
